Have you ever met someone who has skated through life entirely on his/her looks? Have you ever wondered what would happen if this person was unfortunately book smart and placed in your Italian Literature class? Well it would go something like this:
Background discussion centering on tattoos, peoples' tattoos and how significant some tattoos are.
Blond Girl, "Yeah, i have these tattoos, you know how when little kids draw birds they just look like 'v's'? I have five of those, one for every member of my family."
Funny Guy, "Wow, that is a pretty good idea."
Girl next to me, "Yeah, i want to get my grandmother's signature tattood on my back, she's an artist i really respect."
Girl-who-skated-through-life-on-looks/booksmarts-
but-has-nothing-to-offer-humanity(gwstlolbbhsntoh) shortly after entering the classroom mid-discussion," I think tattoos are trashy."
... silence....
Funny Guy," You realize everyone in here but you has at least one tattoo right?"
Gwstlolbbhsntoh, "Sorry, that's just how i feel."
Funny Guy, "Oh, well i guess that makes it ok, since that is how you feel."
Gwstlolbbhsntoh," Yeah, i guess so." clearly not picking up on sarcasm
moments later class is in disbelief that I "nerdy guy" have a tattoo
Nerdy guy, "No really, its right here." lifts sleeve and shows tattoo
Gwstlolbbhsntoh, "Wow, you have an awful farmer's tan."
Nerdy guy, "Yeah, my membership at the tanning salon lapsed." glares
Gwstlolbbhsntoh, "Oh, yeah, that stinks." clearly not picking up on sarcasm, AGAIN
Thanks Gwstlolbbhsntoh, you made me more appreciative of mute people, because they don't come off nearly as obnoxious as you. Also, if there were justice in the world, this girl would have been hit by a lightening bolt after walking outside. Sadly this didn't happen, and my faith in fairness hit an all time low.

I think that label's really going to be a popular one, good choice.
Tattoos are white trash! No upper/high class individual would ever taint there beautiful god given body with something as trashy as tattoos. Sure people are going to argue that its a form of self expression, BS! If you like something so much get a painting or something. Why taint your body and look like a whore if your a female and a convict just fresh out prison if your a male! Only group of people that I completely understand for having tattoos are the tribal kind. Everyone else is just a group-think mass following sheep.
I'll admit sometimes I see a girl full of tattoos that is sexually attractive. Only thing I can think of are bad things. Respect is out the door!
Tattoos are inextricably ephemeral, a sort of indelible stamp of an impending identity crisis, as the typically insecure people who feel compelled to seek approval/recognition through the disfiguration of their own flesh tend to be the type to pick the most shallow, tacky and trite subjects/objects. Case in point: Remember all those dunderheads who jumped on the barbed wire tattoo bandwagon a decade ago? Where are they now? I haven't seen a barbed wire tattoo in years. If that was "self-expression" these poor souls conveniently made their expression disappear now that it's no longer "cool". Now while I concede that there are exceptions, most women who get them (unfortunately an age eighteen rite of passage these days) choose the most vapid and self-centered designs - the name of their latest "baby daddy" emblazoned into their arm or Chinese characters that may possibly signify what they were told by the "artist" or for all they know, translate to "enter here" or "Starbucks".
May this cliched cultural catastrophe go away as quickly as it arrived...
hear hear @ San and Dick Hardy. Couldn't have said it better myself!
For those of you who have or want tattoos, for christ sakes stop acting like sheep and get your own ideas. Yes you DO look like a criminal and yes I WILL look down on you.
I have to say something. Apparently it is popular to sit on the computer all day and write your opinions. So much for having a life. I am in college for my masters degree and I own my own house and have a fantastic job. I also have a beautiful family ( me, my boyfriend and my daughter). However, I have three tattoos. I do not think that tattoos make a person. Have any of you heard of freedom of speech? What if I told you that you could not tan? Does that even make sense? My tattoos are for my daughter and my family. Stop being prejudice. Times have changed and not everyone who has a tattoo is some ghetto gangbanger. Stereotyping people is wrong. Get over yourself. You probably are not so self righteous yourself.
I love how you characterize people who disagree with you (effectively worthless), yet slam them because they disagree with you. Pot, meet kettle. Let me know how earth shattering it is when you lift your veil of self-righteous ignorance. In the interim, please continue making ad hominem attacks as it boasts both maturity and intellect.
(Another) Samantha
not to be mean but tattoos are trashy and for attempted trendy followers. G-d didnt want them on you or he would have put them there. and im no religious zealot. thank you san and dick hardy for showing that there are still a few of us out there with morals and values. its funny, i just went thru a nasty divorce. so did a former friend/neighbor down the street. shes said "why dont you date?" i said "because my divorce isnt final." she said "im too rigid!" marriage is a religious and binding legal contract. but people dont care about right and wrong anymore.... they just want to please themselves at the time in whatever manner they want without regard to how the world around them is affected. well i expect my x friend neighbor will be getting her tattoo soon!
I think the tattoos people choose can be trashy, but I don't think it's right to stereotype. Don't like tattoos? Fine. That doesn't mean you should instantly look down on people who do. Just because someone has a tattoo doesn't mean they're prison-fresh white trash.
I think you have to be not all there to get a tattoo, let alone these circus freaks that have an addiction and get one after the other. It is totally disgusting and more so disgusting for women. Tattoos make women look masculine. What in the world are these folks thinking???
First of all, I am most certainly not white trash. I think people who are going to label anyone as such should maybe look at themselves. White trash...well gee that is racist. Many people of color have tattoos as well, do you think that white people who get tattoos go "down to their level" or some other belief? That is very racist. Beyond that, "they look terrible on females" is a sexist comment. On males they are fine, but females need to be pure and virginal forever? No, thank you. I have two tattoos. I come from a good family with good people. I go to a good college and did not get them fresh at 18. They have thought and meaning behind them. I am intelligent and have the whole world in front of me, ready to be explored and changed. High class is just a monetary status in America by the way. My tattoos are tasteful and classic, a line from my favorite poem and a symbol representing my deceased daughter. Now tell me I am trashy. Tell me I am of a "lower class" despite the fact that that is a monetary status, again. Tell me that I am not respected. And then demand respect for yourself. Demand of me, and many others, that we respect your high opinions of your moral and ethical entities simply for the fact that you have no tattoos. Demand of me that I respect you, eurolease, for not loving your neighbor in her time of hardship, despite your disagreement of her life choices. Go on, I dare you.
@annemarie Trashy is as Trashy does. It's not about monetary status at all. You can treat yourself with dignity and respect and not be wealthy. It's an attitude and not money.
Ever seen a building look better for an ad placed on it? a scribbled tag make a wall look better?
Yes, you are trashy. I don't care what the sentimental value is to you. Shakespeare may be wonderful stuff but I would want someone to doodle a line from one of his plays on my bathroom wall either.
@annemarie Respect is earned, not just given. Looking lower class will get you treated like you're lower class. Don't want to be treated like a $3 hooker, then don't look like one. It's not rocket science.
There's no such thing as a "tasteful" or "classic" tattoo. Obviously you have no idea what it means to have any "class" at all. It's not about your finances. I guess maybe that's where your education has failed you. Paris Hilton can rake in the cash...I don't think anyone would call her "high class".
If you have to have it explained to you you'll never understand what it is and therefore...you don't have it.
And the defense that many people are doing it is pretty lame. McDonalds sells more food than anyone else but I wouldn't call it great food would you? Ubiquitous does not equate to quality.
How tragic... my beautiful, ten minute post just got destroyed in a matter of seconds...
Tattoos are trashy because they taint your body? So it's a sin? For the Christian people who believe this, I'm sure you realize that God knows this too. God sees our foolishness and sinfulness. That's why he sacrificed Jesus Christ, no? Humans are capricious beings with plenty of sin--there is no human being that does not sin. Be it a thought, an action, a belief, or a dream, every human has sinned, has realized that they have sinned, and will sin again. There really is very little room around this. However, the least we can do is keep harmful thoughts to ourselves. In order to avoid being judged, you shouldn't judge others, right? I have no doubt that every person who has posted something degrading about tattoos has had reason to be degraded by someone else. Which really doesn't make sense, seeing as what does around ends up coming around. Where does looking down on someone get you? You get looked down on yourself. Then again, there ARE people who get tattoos for extremely superficial reasons that have nearly no reason to be respected. I suppose that in that case, harmful statements may be accurate--then congrats...you've effectively harmed another human's well-being. Was that what God wanted? And what if you're wrong? Well, expect to be labeled yourself--as a self-righteous, egoistic hypocrite who can't sympathize with other human beings. In the end, I simply hope that labels like "whore" don't get placed on people just because of choices (that have nothing to do with what a "whore" really is, by the way) that they've made. No matter what choice you make, there will always be someone out there who thinks you are completely wrong. Which is why I now turn to the people who defended tattoos. Why are you here? If you have a tattoo and claim that it is for self-expression, you shouldn't care at all about what some random person says about it. You have your own reasons, classy or not, that don't have to be accepted by anyone but yourself (especially when you don't even know the people you're arguing to...some might just be flippantly making a statement that they don't even believe--then you've wasted your time). Even if you just posted because you felt indignant about some people's beliefs, I doubt that antagonizing people and simply using yourself as an example will prove your point. Rather, that just opens you up to personal insults and accusations. I find that many people on this blog have had(as someone else pointed out) "Pot, meet Kettle" moments that really cannot be denied. I'm sure that I myself have done the same. All we can do is not post or at least understand that we will be open to criticism for what we write. We've been warned. :)
You have to admit.. they're a little bit trashy
http://christinascontinuouslist.blogspot.com/2011/07/why-tattoos-are-terrible.html
Getting ink done is not a contribution to society in any shape or form. It is a shallow expression of lack of identity. Case and point, a Person is defined by there actions and not by the clothes they wear. That certainly applies to tattoos.
@Samantha:
You certainly can't tell us not to stereotype others. Our feelings towards tattoos are no more valid than your attitude towards yours. Forcing others to accept it is just as evil. Tacky is tacky.
Whether you believe tattoos are trashy or not is your opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Like I personally believe that if you think all tattoos are trashy that you are a narrowminded cave dweller who contributes less to society than the criminals who pick up trash on the side of the road. But that is my opinion. If you are that way because of being a Christian, I have to say that you are a blind sheep. Because if tattoos are a sin, then I hope you've never trimmed you beard or worn two types of fabric at the same time because according to the Old Testament doing so is a sin. I am a Christian, but I've studied what I believe.
Why do you care? Does calling people with tattoos stupid honestly brighten your day? Here's a thought; how about instead of judging other people for things that are NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS, why don't you spend some time on yourself. Then maybe you won't feel the need to bring others down just to prove to yourself how good of a person you are.
